Tackling antisocial behaviour

Description

Tackling antisocial behaviour

Town Safety Team

A new team consisting of Street Marshals, antisocial behaviour (ASB) and CCTV officers, CEOs and the Police neighbourhood team will provide a multi-agency, high-profile presence in Barnstaple town centre.

The team will provide public reassurance and deescalate situations that could lead to antisocial behaviour. They will build relationships with local businesses and provide a direct link to police and council teams.

The presence of enforcement officers is an intervention that makes people feel safer in Barnstaple.

Safe Space

A Safe Space will be established in Barnstaple High Street, providing a pop-up base for agencies to offer support, help and advice.

The Safe Space, which is being provided by Barnstaple Town Council will be used on a flexible basis.

ASB Intervention

The majority of ASB incidents are committed by a relatively small number of prolific offenders who would benefit from targeted support.

A High Flow worker will work within the Barnstaple policing team and Liaison and Diversion to provide a support service for individuals with a view to avoiding further contact with public services and reducing the impact on the community.

A Youth Intervention Team (YIT) practitioner will attend local schools and deliver intervention work for young people at the point of contact with police or when their education provider seeks support due to poor behaviour. Their focus will be to work with young people to address violent and antisocial behaviour.
